Nutrition and fall risk. What’s the connection? It is pretty simple when you think about it. Poor nutrition sparks muscle and
weight loss. Pensacola Spinal Rehab Center thoroughly assesses our
older Pensacola chiropractic patients at risk for falls, especially their nutritional status. Pensacola Spinal Rehab Center is
concerned about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers attempted to define
the relationship between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older adults
who reside in community settings. They found that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment had
a 45% higher risk of having at least one fall. (1)
Verifying BMI and nutritional status is pretty
easy to perform. Pensacola Spinal Rehab Center does it to protect
our Pensacola chiropractic patients!
Pensacola FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often disregarded
nutritional status instead concentrating on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status has a role,
too. Malnutrition prompts weight loss which prompts
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It’s truly
a ripple effect! A new study reported
that malnutrition was significantly linked with high fall risk
according to several leading fall risk assessment
tools (particularly the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Poor nutritional status in older adults especially those with a history of falling sets them up
for higher risk of poorer recovery from a fall.
Almost a third of community-dwelling adults with a fall history were either already malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Improving the nutritional status of those who have fallen enhanced their physical
performance. (3) Pensacola Spinal Rehab Center understands nutrition and is ready
to help our at-risk patients correct theirs!
